The AHAPC is a resource centre that shares objective information and tools, through research and communication, and assists First Nations in a positive way. The AHAPC advocates the First Nations’ collective interests and in consideration of traditional knowledge, meaningful engagement and full participation of First Nation interests in the pipeline project. The AHAPC focuses in areas of joint interest that include: regulatory framework, environmental and socio-economic assessment, and socio-economic impacts and benefits.
The AHAPC manages the pipeline information flow to its members from information acquisition and synthesizes to distribution and feedback. As such, it is recognized as a first point of contact on pipeline and related issues to First Nations in the Yukon. Nevertheless, the AHAPC does not have Aboriginal rights, speak or negotiate on behalf of First Nations, nor have decision-making authority. It is therefore expected that any correspondence from industry and the governments of Yukon and Canada on the pipeline project be directed directly to the AHAPC member First Nation governments, as well as the AHAPC for the benefit of continuity on its operations.
Objectives of the AHAPC
- Foster good working relations between member and non-member First Nation governments, industry and the governments of Yukon and Canada
- Provide technical support to member First Nation governments in their respective participation with industry and the governments of Yukon and Canada on the pipeline project
